The seven 3 year olds we bought in Goffs are now all backed and riding around the farm, they will trot around the farm for a week or so before having quiet hacks on the sand and up the hill before getting a few week’s grass before they tread the long road to the racecourse. Not one of them has made life difficult for us or themselves and have been beautifully behaved.   Jester Jet h...

I spent most of last week in Ireland at the Goffs sale flying out on Sunday in preparation to get around all of day one horses before the sale started. Monday was a long day but I managed to accomplish what I wanted.  We bought 7 horses home from the sale. Trade was strong in a very competitive market. Goffs select a particular type of horse for their sale, the horses tend not to have the s...

Yesterday we pulled out both our runners out at Southwell, I think both of them want top of the ground and the standing water up the straight at Southwell was apparent. Bhakti, tried his hardest at Uttoxeter today finishing 2nd to what appears to be a well handicapped horse in great form. Ultimately, Bhakti will jump a fence and that time is closing in on him fast. We will carry on and have ano...

David John made it 4 wins from 4 runners for his owner trainer combination. His jumping was accurate enough for the first time over fences and his jump 3 out won him the race, he stayed on to the line and will grow in confidence mentally for that, he certainly knows he’s won and was extremely pleased with himself this morning. Arctic Sword ran a very pleasing race, he was caught fo...

Yesterdays trade at Cheltenham was patchy in that if the horses didn’t tick enough boxes they were punished in the ring. We bid on one horse but sadly didn’t get him. The 2 stores we bought in Doncaster last week are now riding around the school and doing everything asked of them. David John and Arctic Sword will run at Worcester tomorrow afternoon, David John is taking on fences f...

You have to be prepared for everything in this job, cloud seeding was apparent over Cartmel on Saturday and put pay to Jester Jet’s chance of making it 4 wins in a row for us for now. She will get another chance another day and worse things happen. Colt Lighting ran a very nice race but bumped into a seasoned pro from a very good yard. There is no substitute for experience and he will cert...

It has been a non stop week, we left for sunny Doncaster on Sunday with 4 stores who were vetted Sunday afternoon. One thing we have all learnt from the week is that the demand for horses at all levels has never been stronger. The store market was strong as were the horses in training. We followed a few in to the ring with a nice budget yet they made double of what I expected and sometimes more....

If you’ve not been racing in Perth it ought to go on to your list of things to do, it is totally charming. They serve fish and chips from a proper shop, have a real ale bar and sell proper ice creams. Bagpipes accompany the jockeys to the parade ring before each race and the racecourse directors and staff make you feel most welcome. I meet people I hadn’t seen for years and had a lov...

Arctic Sword ran at Whitfield on Sunday on horrendous ground at no fault of the organizers. They had applied plenty of water only to get 10mm of rain prior to racing which turned the ground into every variable going description possible. We felt, given our policy of selling all our stores at the end of each season he had to take his chance and expected him to cope on the ground better than he di...

Equus Amadeus got the new season off to a great start last night at Exeter, he has improved from run to run. Watching horses progress in the right direction is one of the joys of the job. Aidan Coleman was very taken by him. He came home, ate every nut and spent the day in glorious sunshine out in the field. He will now head for his summer break with a view to starting over hurdle in September O...
